Saturday, July 17 Power Outage

On Saturday, July 17, Kiawah, Seabrook and lower portions of Johns Island were out of power for over five hours.  Martha Harris of Berkely Electric Cooperative explained that the power outage was caused by a large pine tree falling on the Santee Cooper transmission line to the Legareville substation.

The transmission line has a Y split with one "branch" supplying Kiawah, Seabrook and lower Johns Island. The tree broke the line completely in a location before the split in the line, making the other "branch" inoperable and unable to provide backup power.

In addition to the broken transmission line, the insulators were also broken and it was exacerbated by the remote location and heavy foliage that had to be cleared to start the repairs.
