The Town of Kiawah Island provides a comprehensive solid waste program for island property owners who own single family homes. Collection for villas and condo is handled directly by the homeowners associations.

Recycling is conducted on the same day as your solid waste pick-up.  All recycling bins must be placed curbside the morning of your regular solid waste pickup.  Yard debris service takes place on Thursdays. Click to see which day your street is serviced: Street Collection Days

Brown trash pick-up is completed quarterly, occuring four times per year and household hazardous waste dropoff collections are completed twice per year and included in the cost of curbside, backdoor and Saturday service. Single family regime homes do not receive recycling or yard debris service.  See Holiday and Brown Trash Collection Calendar for specific dates.

All services include one garbage container and recycling bin. Additional containers can be obtained from Suburban Disposal for a charge of $75 and one additional recycling bin can be obtained free of charge from the Town (depending on availability). Owners can also purchase recycling bin wheel kits from the Town at $15 per set - installed or in package.  For any questions or assistance please contact Town Hall at 768-9166.

Bills are mailed by August for the service year of July 1 to June 30. If you wish to change the type of service you receive, you may call Town Hall during the month of April to request a change which will be effective July 1.  Exceptions to this rule can be made on a case by case basis.

Town of Kiawah Island
Island-Wide Recyling Report

The Town has been working on an Island-wide Recycling Initiative for the past year.  This initiative seeks to make recycling service available  to residents not currently participating in the Town’s recycling program, and is not mandatory. To keep residents informed the Town has published information in Town Notes and recently held a Public Information meeting on Wednesday, May 20th.  Since this time, residents have expressed a number of questions regarding the program.  Due to the number of questions, Town Council has directed staff to respond to these questions and help clarify the concerns about the project.  In addition, Town Council as charged the Environmental Committee to review the staff’s recommendations and make a final recommendation to Council.  As a result, the initiative will not be fully implemented by July 1st as originally published.

Attached is a comprehensive report that details the initiative and serves to better clarify the points raised by residents.  The information contained in the report is not final and is subject to change.  These are staff recommendations only and must be finalized by Town Council .  Please review the attached report and share any additional information with the Town that you feel may be necessary.

In particular, based on the information contained in the report, please let us know whether you individually or as a regime would like to participate in the program.  Sign-up sheets will be available at the upcoming public information meeting and are currently available at Town Hall.   The Town understands that the regime boards are responsible for making the decision to participate in the program or not.  The information is being provided to you as a guide to help you make this decision and Town staff will be available to meet with you during your decision making process.  Further, feel free to share with us recommendations to improve the proposed initiative. Comments should be directed to Tumiko Rucker at 768-9166 or trucker@kiawahisland.org.
