Brad Belt was elected as the Town of Kiawah Island’s mayor in April 2024 and had previously been elected to serve as a council member in December 2022.

During his career, Mayor Belt has led high performing organizations in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. He has served as vice chairman of Orchard Global; founder and chairman of Palisades Capital; executive director and CEO of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation in the Administration of President George W. Bush; and senior managing director of The Milken Institute. In addition to his executive roles, Mayor Belt also held senior officer positions at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a financial technology company, along with senior staff roles at the US Securities and Exchange Commission and US Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.   He has also served on the boards of directors or advisory boards of several companies, nonprofit organizations, and professional associations.

Role of the Mayor in Mayor-Council Form of Government
The Town of Kiawah Island operates under the Mayor-Council form of government. Pursuant to state law, the Mayor presides over Council meetings, calls special meetings, and votes as a member of the Council. The Mayor acts as chief administrative officer of the Town and appoints and removes employees subject to personnel rules adopted by Council.  The Mayor supervises departments and ensures the faithful execution of laws. In addition, the Mayor prepares and submits a budget and capital program to Council, makes an annual financial report to the public and Council, and reports to the Council on the operation of departments.
