All Town committees are comprised of gracious volunteers, and their dedication and hard work is greatly appreciated. All meetings are held at the Municipal Center located at 4475 Betsy Kerrison Parkway, Kiawah Island, SC 29455. More information is available under each Board or Committee description.

Boards & Committees
Arts & Cultural Events Council
The Arts and Cultural Events Council work to enhance community appreciation and involvement in the visual and performing arts within the Town of Kiawah Island and its environs by providing a diversity of planned programs. They work to develop relationships with arts organizations, plan; implement an arts calendar and inform the community of planned events.

Monthly, every 1st Thursday at 2:00pm

Audit Committee
The Audit Committee assist the Mayor and the Town Council in fulfilling its responsibility to provide oversight of management regarding the Town’s systems of internal controls and risk management; the integrity of the Town’s financial statements; the Town’s compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and ethical standards; and the engagement, independence and performance of the Town’s independent auditors.

As needed, usually during the annual audit

Board of Zoning & Appeals
Members serve a three year term. The BZA has three main purposes:

1) To hear and decide zoning appeals when it is alleged by the appellant that an administrative official has made an error (Administrative Review)
2) To hear and decide applications for variance from the requirements of zoning regulations (Variances)
3) To permit uses by special exception, subject to the terms and conditions for those uses as identified in the zoning regulations (Special Exceptions).

Monthly, every 3rd* Monday at 4:00pm

*January and February meetings held on the 4th Monday at 4:00pm

CERT Team
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference. Through training, citizens can manage utilities and put out small fires; treat the three killers by opening airways, controlling bleeding, and treating for shock; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective.

CERTIFIED MEMBER

Certified members have gone through the required 32 hours of classroom training and have been certified by Charleston County Emergency Management Services and FEMA.

VOLUNTEER MEMBER

In the event of an emergency, volunteers will be teamed with certified members to form two-person teams to respond to the disaster.

Communications Workgroup
The Communications Workgroup works with Town Staff to help maintain and improve the quality of Town publications and communications

Construction Board of Appeals
The Construction Board of Appeals hear appeals regarding decisions and interpretations made by the Town’s Building Official.  Specifically this committee hearing grievances and appeals regarding the application of the International Building Code, Residential Code, Mechanical Code, Plumbing Code, Fuel and Gas Code, Fire Code, Energy Conservation Code, Property Maintenance Code, Existing Building Code, Swimming Pool and Spa Code, and the National Electrical Code.

Annually, usually February, date and time determined by member availability

Environmental Committee
The Environmental Committee’s primary objectives are to study and report on environmental issues, serve as an advocate for the protection of wildlife and their habitat, provide and/or support educational programs to increase public awareness of the Kiawah’s natural environment, and make recommendations as appropriate to Town Council.

Monthly, every 2nd Tuesday at 3:00 pm, beginning in January

Planning Commision
The Planning Commission’s primary objectives are to approve plats and make recommendations to the Town Council on planned development, zoning district and map amendments, zoning text amendments, and comprehensive plan updates. Members serve a four year term

Public Safety Committee
The Public Safety Committee is responsible for assisting the Town in meeting its state-mandated responsibilities with regard to maintaining order and law enforcement and to initiate and consider proposals and methods to upgrade and improve public safety on the Island and to manage our beach safety.

Public Works Committee
The Public Works Committee assists the Town in monitoring and making recommendations to improve solid waste services, infrastructure, facilities and utility needs and to recommend and consider proposals and methods to upgrade and improve public works related services on the Island.
State Accommodations Tax Committee
The Accommodations Tax Committee meets annually to consider SATAX applications and make recommendations to the Ways and Means Committee on how the Town’s tourism-related funding should be allocated during the following budget year.

Annually, usually in April, date and time determined by Administrator and Treasurer

Town Council
The Mayor and four Council Members comprise the legislative branch of the Town. It is their duty to set overall policy in matters concerning the operation of the Town’s affairs. The Mayor is further charged with the executive functions of Town management. He is responsible for coordinating and carrying out the policies established by the Town Council and for seeing that the duties of all Town employees are performed efficiently and effectively. Terms for Mayor and Council Members are two years. The at-large elections are nonpartisan. These elected officials are volunteers who receive no compensation. View the current Town Council here
Ways And Means
The Ways and Means Committee is responsible for making recommendations to the Town Council on annual budgets, methods of funding, procurement and contracts, and any other financial matters as the Town Council may direct.
